Supporting New Life: Goodman Foundation and UNFPA Provide Critical Support for Newborns in Ukraine

In the face of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation, Ukraine's healthcare system has endured severe disruption, and has continued to put the lives of women and newborns at risk. As a consequence of the war and amid the stress and trauma, premature births across Ukraine have increased grown since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, with more than 14,780 recorded in 2023. Security concerns, damaged infrastructure, and restricted mobility have continued to lead to an increase in premature births of approximately 30% compared to 2022.

Responding to this critical need, the Goodman Foundation donated USD$425,000 enabling the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to procure nine state-of-the-art mobile incubators to provide lifesaving support for premature and vulnerable newborn babies. In any 12- month period, it is expected that up to 1,620 newborns will benefit from this essential service. This significant contribution, in collaboration with the support of NGO 'USA for UNFPA,' aims to address the immediate challenges faced by healthcare providers and safeguard the lives of newborns in conflict zones.

These mobile incubators will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of newborns in the most affected regions of Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv. They empower healthcare professionals to transport infants to medical facilities securely and provide essential care during air raids by moving them to bomb shelters. The modern incubators, equipped to maintain optimal temperature, humidity, and oxygen levels, represent a critical advancement in neonatal care.

Massimo Diana, UNFPA Representative in Ukraine, expressed gratitude, stating, ”The UNFPA Ukraine team dedicates our efforts to secure the lives of newborns in areas affected by war hostilities. We extend our thanks to the international community and private sector for their humanitarian aid, prioritizing safe motherhood and childhood. The Goodman Foundation’s support is crucial in addressing newborn mortality, enhancing the health and well-being of women and their children within the humanitarian response framework in Ukraine”.

"The Goodman Foundation is committed to meeting the essential needs of the most vulnerable in our community, particularly in times of crisis. Our partnership with the UNFPA to supply mobile incubators for newborns in Ukraine helps protect the health and wellbeing of babies who face the harsh realities of conflict. Through our collaborative efforts, we are proud to be making a tangible and sustainable difference, helping newborns receive the care and support they urgently need”. Our partnership with UNFPA is part of our €1,000,000 commitment to support emergency response and on-going support for Ukraine, added Kris Ashpole, CEO Goodman Foundation.
