This year, on International Day of the Midwife, we recognise these heroes and their crucial role in maternal and newborn health in Ukraine and worldwide.

Once again, we acknowledge the profound importance of their role in the medical sphere. The role of midwives extends far beyond delivering babies – they provide comprehensive care to women throughout their reproductive journey, from prenatal to postnatal care, ensuring the health and well-being of both mother and child.

In many communities, midwives are the primary healthcare providers for expectant mothers. They offer essential services, including prenatal examinations, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care. Their expertise and compassionate care significantly improve mothers' and babies' safety and positive birthing experiences.

"Everywhere, the midwife understands the needs and traditions of her community. She delivers care with loving care. Her calming presence is a steady support to women and a stabilising force in her community," UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem has said.

In Ukraine, UNFPA is actively working to strengthen the role of midwives, especially in regions where access to quality medical care for women and girls is limited due to the full-scale invasion. Our efforts are focused on expanding the capabilities of midwives through training programs and mentoring initiatives. By enhancing their skills and knowledge, we aim to help midwives gain the necessary tools to provide evidence-based assistance and support to women and newborns in their communities.

Furthermore, investing in midwifery education and training has an impact beyond individual patient care. It contributes to the overall improvement of the healthcare system by reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates, promoting family planning, and empowering women to make informed choices about their reproductive health.

By supporting midwives, we are investing in the health and well-being of women and newborns and the sustainable development of communities and societies.
