Two years ago, as the Russian full-scale invasion unfolded, we witnessed the shocking reality of conflict-related sexual violence being used as a weapon of war in Ukraine. The stories were deeply troubling, and the number of survivors needing support grew rapidly.

UNFPA Ukraine did not stand aside and together with the Government of Ukraine, we collaborated to establish a comprehensive response system and, in a remarkably short time,  jointly launched with the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration the network of the Survivor Relief Centres.

Two years ago today, the first Survivor Relief Centre in Zaporizhzhia was starting its operation. Now, we have such centers in 12 cities across Ukraine, and three more Mobile Centres, providing support in hard-to-reach regions. These centers are vital for survivors, offering holistic care that respects their privacy and needs. For those who can’t access the physical centers, the Aurora online platform offers psychotherapeutic assistance to the survivors of violence from any corner of the world.

Each Survivor Relief Centre is unique, with its own story and path, but all share a common mission: to provide compassionate, comprehensive support in a safe space. Unfortunately, there's no quick fix for the impacts of violence, but our long-term approach aims to help survivors recover and reintegrate to their communities. Our collective efforts must be focused on supporting and healing survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.

Today, on June 19th, the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, we reaffirm our commitment to upholding human rights and supporting survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.

As stated by UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem, “Together, we must do more. We must scale up services to meet the needs and safeguard the rights of even more survivors. To do so, it is critical to close the vast funding gap that stands in the way of progress. Right now, less than 15 percent of the funds needed for essential prevention and protection services are available to respond to gender-based violence in crises.”

Our determination, dedication, and strong partnerships will keep driving us forward. We can build a future where everyone’s dignity and rights are protected, with a zero tolerance to a sexual violence.
