June 16, 2021, Poltava - The UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine and Poltava City Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their cooperation and promote the city's capacity to implement gender equality policies and prevent gender-based violence.
The memorandum was signed by Jaime Nadal, UNFPA representative in Ukraine and Oleksandr Mamay, Poltava city Mayor.
Jaime Nadal thanked Oleksandr Mamay for the cooperation between UNFPA and Poltava City Council and noted that the memorandum would be a catalyst for positive changes in the gender equality area and support the promotion of responsible fatherhood. The cooperation will be deepened within the "Equality to Springboard" Project, implemented by the UNFPA Ukraine in partnership with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine with the financial support of Sweden.
“The Equality Springboard project implemented by United Nations Population Fund addresses questions of gender equality, responsible fatherhood and zero tolerance to violence, that are prioritized in the Swedish Feminist Foreign Policy and provides assistance in multiple regions of Ukraine. One of them is Poltava, which takes a special place in the Swedish history, and we appreciate this deepened cooperation between the City of Poltava and our partners UNFPA“, Tobias Tiberg, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sweden to Ukraine.
“Poltava has been cooperating with the UN Population Fund in Ukraine within different projects for the last two years. During this time we have been able to build an effective system to respond to domestic and gender-based violence. Today we are opening TATOhub.Poltava and soon we are going to open a Daycare Center along with a "crisis room" to provide social and psychological assistance to domestic violence victims. Our cooperation with UNFPA Ukraine helps Poltava to be the "City Free from Violence" and "City that promotes gender equality principles," mentioned Oleksandr Mamay, Mayor of Poltava city.
"This memorandum is designed to help us deepen our cooperation in areas of common interest, first and foremost it will contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 5 - Gender Equality. Together, we will implement initiatives aimed to promote responsible parenthood and prevent and combat domestic violence", said Jaime Nadal, UNFPA representative in Ukraine.
“The government has to provide truly powerful and effective initiatives to achieve gender equality and should be seen as the main goal for all state programs and strategic directions of development", mentioned Dmytro Kaplun, Deputy Head of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine.
