9-10 October 2014, training of trainers from the Training-Counseling Center of Ukrainian Association of International Truck Drivers and its regional offices is conducted by United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine (UNFPA), together with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Ukrainian Association of International Truck Drivers (AsMAP).
The training aims to familiarize teachers with the adapted Manual “Road of Change” and to provide practical information on how to use it, so that HIV prevention training course can be implemented in the training curriculum for drivers in the centers.
The seminar is conducted in the framework of the project on HIV prevention and formation of safe behavior among truck drivers that is mutually implemented by the United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine, together with the International Labour Organisation and Ukrainian Association of International Truck Drivers.
Welcoming the participants of the training, the UNFPA Representative in Ukraine Ms. Nuzhat Ehsan said that the project aims to raise awareness on HIV among truck drivers and to create less risky work environment for them, because, as she noted, “truck drivers’ knowledge of HIV-infection and its transmission ways is far below of that of general population, leading to different myths about HIV as well as risky behavior”. Ms. Ehsan added that the project also builds on partnerships with professional associations and unions, private sector, and NGOs.
Cooperation between UNFPA, ILO and AsMAP Ukraine, began in 2012. By now many things have been done within the project: behavioral research on knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of truck drivers on HIV / AIDS was conducted, information booklet for truck drivers "Rules of the Road Health" was developed and published, a set of teaching materials on HIV prevention among truck drivers “Road of Change ", developed jointly by the ILO, the International Transport Workers Union and the International Transport Workers Federation, was adapted and published.
The set of teaching materials includes three different manuals: for teachers / trainers, for management of transport companies and for truck drivers.
At the end of the workshop the teachers will receive certificates of trainers on HIV prevention and formation of a healthy lifestyle and safe behavior among truck drivers, and will be provided with a set of teaching materials for future work.
