Dear Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Your Excellencies, Dear Distinguished Guests, Partners, and Friends. Let me start with four words: Choices. Dignity. Safety. Care.
Every person everywhere is entitled to these rights. Yet we see time and time again, especially during war, women and girls are the first to lose these so-called inalienable rights. During wars, violence against women and girls sharply increases. That is a fact.
Ukrainian women continue to show strength, compassion, and resilience in the face of war. Though their strength alone is not enough; we all need to stand behind them and beside them. Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence begins today and ends on International Human Rights Day on 10 of December.
Gender-based violence comes in many forms: from physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, and economic violence. It creates insecurity, instability, and shame. It drives silence. Prevents women from effectively participating in society. Leaves lasting scars for future generations. Long-term stability requires safeguarding and investing in women’s well-being.
The Government of Ukraine has made commendable progress, establishing national services to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, even amid war. Ukrainian service providers are saving lives every day, even under extreme conditions. Every. Single. Day. Women-led organizations play a key role in rebuilding communities and addressing urgent needs. Community collaboration is the power and the meaning of true sisterhood.
The commitment to end violence against women is not possible without the support of our esteemed donors. Your critical partnerships ensure these gains are not lost. We must continue this important work together. Every. Day.
Dear friends, as we enjoy tonight’s event, let us remember why we are truly here. Together, we must bring light to the darkness. And let us ensure the choices, dignity, safety and care of the women and girls of Ukraine.
