On this Human Rights Day, let's direct our unwavering attention to Ukraine, particularly to those whose lives have been irrevocably altered by the ongoing war. As our UNFPA Executive Director eloquently puts it, "In all humanitarian contexts, UNFPA defends the rights of women and girls through shared principles of justice, equality, and compassion."
It is profoundly apt that Human Rights Day falls on December 10th, marking the culmination of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This synchronicity underscores our commitment in Ukraine to defending every individual's rights, especially women and girls who have suffered the horrors of conflict-related sexual violence. The full-scale war has not only worsened the existing challenges but has also significantly increased the risk of gender-based violence. Domestic violence continues to be one of the most destructive practices that one human being can commit against the other. We must protect GBV and CRSV survivor’s rights and provide the support they need to heal and rebuild.
Our responsibility extends beyond. We must safeguard the rights of boys and men, of internally displaced persons (IDPs) torn from their homes, of the elderly grieving profound losses, of people with disabilities facing unique challenges, and of the youth watching their future fade amidst chaos.
Seventy-five years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted as our guiding light. It reminds us that respecting every individual's rights is not optional. These rights are non-negotiable. We stand with the people of Ukraine, not in silence, but in action to defend, protect, and promote their rights.
UN agencies are united in helping survivors and supporting the government to address Conflict-Related Sexual Violence effectively. We envision a world where everyone can enjoy all their entitled rights. Let's tirelessly work to realize the promise of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for a brighter future.
On this Day, we remind that international human rights agreements underscore that bodily autonomy is a fundamental right. People must be able and empowered to freely and responsibly make decisions about their bodies.
