In the framework of "Healthy Women of Ukraine" program, training seminar for journalists on family planning in Ukraine, its social and medical aspects, was held in Zhytomyr. The three-day event gathered 35 journalists from Zhytomyr, Zakarpattia, Kirovohrad, Luhansk, Lviv, Sumy, Ternopil, Chernihiv and Kherson regions.

The training was organized by USAID program "Healthy Women of Ukraine" in partnership with the JSI Research & Training Institute supported by the UNFPA Office in Ukraine.

During the Zhytomyr press tour, representatives of the regional media had an opportunity to learn a lot about the features of family planning and reproductive health services area.

During the information sessions, journalists were provided with wide range of scientific data and evidence on the safety, efficiency and contraceptive methods with regard to different life periods to avoid unwanted pregnancy, to adjust the time spaces in between of pregnancies, that allow to set the timing of childbearing depending on the age of the parents and predetermine the number of children in the family.

Participants visited a consultative and diagnostic unit and genetic laboratory of Zhytomyr Regional Perinatal Center, talked to experts and doctors.

Journalists took part in the press conference held in Zhytomyr Press Center. Ms. Nelia Kovalyuk, Head of the Zhytomyr Oblast NGO for people with disabilities, and Mr. Alexander Bochkovsky, Zhytomyr City Mayor Deputy, presented the results of the medical institutions monitoring aimed to collect evidences on the existing conditions of health services provided to people with disabilities.

Media representatives got a powerful encouragement to raise awareness among general public of the idea that reproductive health and family planning services as well as all related information, are not only the major way to preserve the health of women and men, but also represent one of the fundamental human rights. Everyone has the right to access, choose and use the modern scientific achievements in the family planning area.
