In the heart of Odesa, a city that lives daily under the threat of attacks, there is a place where life conquers fear. Odesa’s Regional Maternity Hospital has become a refuge for women who, despite all the challenges, choose hope and the continuity of life. This photo essay tells the stories of three mothers who brought their children into the world during these challenging times. They are symbols of resilience, love, and faith in the future, even as the sounds of explosions echo outside.
"It was a shock when I found out I was having triplets. I found out about it in the tenth week of pregnancy. We wanted to plan it, but kept putting it off because of the drones at night and the missile strikes. It’s frightening that there are strikes in Odesa, but we saw that other women were giving birth here, so we decided to go ahead. For me, being a woman means being a good wife and mother. When a mother and father are in harmony, everything will be okay for the child," shares Iryna, mother of triplets.
"Being a mother is a great happiness. A woman carries her child throughout the pregnancy and worries about them. I have something that others don’t. If a woman wants a child, wants this happiness, then there’s nothing to worry about — there’s no need to be afraid. If you desire it, believe in yourself; everything will be fine. I hope everyone will be safe and healthy," shares Kateryna, mother of two newborns.
"I have friends who tried to convince me not to have children. Because there’s a war, because it’s frightening, but children are happiness. How could it be otherwise? Parents must give their children confidence in tomorrow, and everything will be fine. I want to believe in it — I won’t even entertain the thought that anything could go wrong," says Kateryna.
In times of uncertainty and constant threat, women giving birth at the Odesa Regional Perinatal Center find the support and care they need for a fresh start. With dignity kits, these mothers can provide comfort and warmth for their children, even in the most challenging moments.
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine, together with the European Union, continues to support women and girls in the regions of Ukraine most affected by the war.
