On February 11, a daycare centre, crisis room, and shelter for survivors of domestic and/or gender-based violence were opened in Cherkasy.  This initiative was implemented as part of the UNFPA project "Cities and Communities Free from Domestic Violence", with the support of the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine and the Cherkasy City Council, financial assistance from the Government of Canada, and in partnership with the NGO "Association of Experts on the Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence."

Cherkasy joined the project in July 2021. Since then, training sessions have been conducted for social workers, psychologists, lawyers, and other specialists, enhancing their preparedness to effectively respond to cases of violence.

Each year, the number of reports of domestic violence continues to rise. In 2023, the Cherkasy City Social Services Center received 138 reports of such cases, while in 2024, this number has already reached 284. So far this year, mobile teams have carried out 172 field visits to provide on-site assistance.

In 2024, a total of 515 individuals received support, including psychological assistance, legal consultations, crisis intervention, advocacy, and social support services. Additionally, mobile teams provided informational services to more than 1,800 residents of the Cherkasy territorial community.

The daycare centre is a free, accessible, and safe space where survivors of violence can receive comprehensive support in a comfortable environment, including:

  • Counseling from a psychologist and a social worker;
  • Legal consultation;
  • Social support services aimed at overcoming or minimizing the consequences of domestic and gender-based violence;
  • Information about services provided by other organizations and institutions working in the field of violence prevention and response.

The crisis response room is a secure 24/7 space for short-term stays for individuals who fear being left alone with their abuser. The location of the crisis room remains confidential.

In crisis rooms, women and children who have experienced domestic violence are guaranteed safety and receive round-the-clock support from specialists. All survivors are provided with essential living conditions, necessities, and food for a comfortable stay.

These services are another step toward creating a safe space for those who have experienced violence, ensuring them proper protection and support within the community.
