The Center for Assistance to Women affected by domestic violence opened in Odesa

On May 31, the Center for Assistance to Women (women with children) victims of domestic violence officially opened on the basis of the Odesa City Center for Social Services for Families, Children and Youth.

The Center includes two divisions: the "Break the Circle" Odesa City Day Care Center for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation and the Shelter for Persons Affected by Domestic and/or Gender-Based Violence. There are 4 one-bedroom apartments for accommodation in the Shelter, equipped with modern furniture and essential household appliances. The Shelter can accommodate up to 14 people at a time. The Center provides comprehensive assistance to the victims at the place of their safe temporary round-the-clock stay, in particular: psychological, social and household, social and medical, information support and health services. The period of stay may not exceed three months. If necessary, it can be extended up to six months.

Opening of the Center was attended by Natalya Fedorovych, Deputy Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine,  Svitlana Bedrega, Deputy Mayor - Director of the Department of Finance of the Odesa City Council, Caspar Peek, Representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine (UNFPA), Rachel Williams, Regional Advisor on Conflicts of the UK Embassy in Ukraine, Karim Morcos, Head of Development Cooperation of Embassy of Canada to Ukraine.

In April 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Odesa City Council and UNFPA in Ukraine. Within the framework of this cooperation the necessary funds were allocated from the city budget for major repairs of the premises to accommodate the future Center. UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine, provided facilities for the Center, offered methodological and organizational support.

The opening of the Center was made possible with the assistance of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund under the Comprehensive Approach to Violence Against Women and Girls in Ukraine program, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine with the support of the governments of the United Kingdom, Canada and Estonia.
