The first training seminar has been launched today in Kyiv. The event was opened by a welcoming remarks by UNFPA Representative for Ukraine, Ms. Nuzhat Ehsan, Ministry of Health of Ukraine Chief Dermatovenereologist, DMedSc, Prof. Oleksandr Litus and Dr. Igor Perihinets from the World Health Organization (WHO).

This is the first one out of the series of events focused on the syndromic approach application to the treatment of the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in HIV vulnerable population groups.

UNFPA Office in Ukraine together with the European Bureau of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine organized the three training seminars aimed at dermatovenerologists working both in the STI treatment services as well as AIDS response measures system in Ukraine. The event will bring together more than 80 experts from all over the country.

Nowadays, the syndromic approach to STI treatment is applied in most countries of the Europe and North America. However, in the current STI cure system in Ukraine, applicability of the syndromic STI treatment is not formalized for clinical practice. This is one of the major challenges that prevent the improving the results of such treatment for the significant number of patients.

Therefore, the events organized by UNFPA are to provide practitioners with the update information on syndromic approach to STI treatment in HIV vulnerable population groups as an effective method of preventing the HIV transmission.
