We are deeply concerned by a devastating incident that occurred on the night of September 20th in Kherson. A Russian airstrike has caused significant damage to the shelter for survivors of domestic violence, a facility established with UNFPA's support.

"We stand in solidarity with all those affected by this attack. This tragic event has endangered the lives of women, children and frontline humanitarian workers. Furthermore, the structural damage limits access to vital services for those in desperate need. We unequivocally condemn any act that endangers aid workers and civilians," stated Massimo Diana, UNFPA Representative in Ukraine.

The shelter for survivors of domestic violence in Kherson serves as a lifeline for those affected by gender-based violence (GBV), and such an attack is a flagrant violation of international norms and principles. This incident directly impacts our ongoing humanitarian endeavors.

We are grateful to report that, to our latest knowledge, no casualties were reported among the dedicated staff, beneficiaries, or partners present at the center during the attack.

This attack not only disrupts our immediate relief efforts but also has the potential to severely hamper our ability to provide essential services in the region. We urgently call for the protection of humanitarian workers, aid facilities, and beneficiaries in line with international humanitarian law. Attacks on humanitarian facilities and personnel are unacceptable.

UNFPA remains unwavering in its commitment to its humanitarian mission in Kherson. We will spare no effort to restore and continue the vital services provided by the shelter for survivors of domestic violence.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our donors, partners, and the international community for their steadfast support during these challenging times.
