The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is pleased to announce a generous contribution of $2.97 million USD from the Government of Sweden, channeled via UNFPA's Humanitarian Thematic Fund to support ongoing humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. This significant donation will greatly enhance UNFPA’s capacity to provide essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services for women and girls in Ukraine.
The war in Ukraine has left over 14.6 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, including 7.8 million who require health services and 2.5 million in need of gender-based violence (GBV) support. The conflict has displaced 3.7 million people within Ukraine and caused 6.3 million to seek refuge in neighboring countries. Ongoing and intensified attacks on civilian infrastructure, particularly energy infrastructure, have made access to life-saving services increasingly challenging. These relentless assaults disrupt essential services, further complicating the delivery of healthcare and critical support systems for those affected by the conflict.
The flexibility of the Humanitarian Thematic Fund plays a pivotal role in addressing the urgent needs of the people of Ukraine, ensuring a swift and efficient response from UNFPA, and contributing to long-term efforts.
“Sweden is committed to supporting the people of Ukraine. Access to sexual and reproductive health services, prevention and response to gender-based violence in the regions across the country are fundamental, not least in times of war. We believe that this assistance will be especially important for women and girls in need.” says Martin Åberg, Ambassador of Sweden to Ukraine.
Sweden is a long-standing partner of UNFPA and continues to demonstrate its commitment to humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. Thanks to Sweden's contribution to the Humanitarian Thematic Fund in 2023, a number of UNFPA services are being supported. These include Psychosocial support mobile teams for survivors of GBV, a network of Survivor Relief Centres for those affected by the war, and operation of SRH Mobile units.
“At UNFPA Ukraine, we are deeply grateful for Sweden’s generous contribution. This funding will enable us to expand our critical services, providing essential support to thousands of women and young people across Ukraine, especially in some of the most affected areas. It's crucial for UNFPA to ensure the support reaches those who need it most and to help strengthen community resilience." said Massimo Diana, UNFPA Representative to Ukraine.
