Kyiv, Ukraine, 9 March - The Government of Sweden contributes a total of almost EUR 9 million to UNFPA, the UN sexual and reproductive agency, that will go to Ukraine and Moldova, while about EUR 2 million will go to Ukraine through UN Women.

As the war enters its second year, UNFPA is working to ensure that women can give birth safely and are protected from gender-based violence despite the raging conflict.

“We are very grateful for Sweden's support to UNFPA's humanitarian work in Ukraine and Moldova,” said Jaime Nadal, UNFPA Representative in Ukraine. In the last year, there have been 760 attacks on health facilities, drastically impacting women’s access to essential sexual and reproductive health services. 8 million of Ukrainian refugees are now in European countries, over 5 million remain internally displaced. The vast majority of them are women and children. Thanks to Sweden' support we will be able to expand access to life-saving sexual and reproductive health services and to protect women and girls from gender-based violence, including conflict-related sexual violence”, he added.

UNFPA will continue to work tirelessly to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of women and girls in Ukraine and Moldova and promote their opportunities and rights.

Sweden is a long-time partner of UNFPA, providing essential core flexible resources to ensure that every woman’s and girl’s sexual and reproductive health and rights are protected and promoted, in Ukraine, and everywhere, without distinction.

UNFPA urgently needs flexible financing to scale up its operations in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. Most urgently UNFPA needs financing to provide essential medical supplies and deploy further trained personnel to deliver life-saving services. The combined funding needed for 2023 is $99 million, including $70.1 million for support inside Ukraine and $28.9 million for the refugee response, out of which $21 million is for Moldova, and $7.9 million is required for other countries affected by the crisis, including regional coordination and technical assistance.
