The Government of Belgium has generously contributed EUR 3 million to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), aimed at enhancing access to essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services for Ukrainian women and girls.
This contribution, aligned with the Ukraine Regional Appeal, is set to bolster humanitarian initiatives throughout 2024, specifically targeting SRH and GBV interventions. Belgium's support enables UNFPA to continue providing crucial GBV and SRH services amidst the ongoing humanitarian challenges in Ukraine. Emphasizing a community-driven approach, the collaboration extends to the Government of Ukraine and local civil society organizations, particularly focusing on empowering women-led organizations to safeguard the rights and welfare of women and girls.
Thanks to this significant contribution from Belgium, a mobile Survivor Relief Centre has been operating since April 2024, providing on-site assistance to Ukrainians affected by war, including conflict-related sexual violence survivors, in the Kharkiv region. Belgium also supports a network of stationary Survivor Relief Centers where anyone in need of help can receive comprehensive psychological, social and legal support. Belgium support has contributed to GBV awareness-raising campaigns , dignity kits, and municipal GBV services support.
Massimo Diana, UNFPA Representative in Ukraine, expressed gratitude for Belgium's support, emphasizing its critical role in ensuring women and girls' access to necessary services, especially in conflict-adjacent regions. "This partnership not only exemplifies our commitment but also marks a significant stride towards impactful support for those most vulnerable," Massimo Diana noted.
Belgian Ambassador to Ukraine Peter Van De Velde said: “Sexual and reproductive health services and protection from gender-based violence are essential. The donation of EUR 3 million to UNFPA will be used to help women and children who have undergone the bitter horrors of war, and it is proof that Belgium is determined to continue to support Ukraine by providing relief to its long-suffering people.”
In reaffirming UNFPA's longstanding dedication to Ukraine, the partnership with Belgium underscores a shared commitment to reaching those in dire need with life-saving services, advocating for a violence-free existence for women and girls.
