Now is the best time to seek help, support a loved one, lend a hand to a stranger, or simply learn more about the issue.
Each year, starting on November 25, the world observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness and call for action against all forms of gender-based violence.
What is Gender-Based Violence (GBV)?
GBV refers to harmful actions inflicted upon someone because of their sex or gender. It can cause physical, psychological, sexual, or economic harm. Common forms of GBV include domestic violence, harassment, intimate partner violence, forced marriages, sexual exploitation, and other harmful practices.
Why Is It Important to Talk About This?
- 1 in 3 women worldwide experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lives.
- Up to 70% of women face violence during wars and crises.
- Only 1 in 3 survivors seeks help.
During times of war, these patterns become even more dangerous. Survivors often downplay their pain due to overwhelming national challenges, rationalize the harm as a result of the perpetrator’s struggles or personality, and consider seeking help as “ill-timed.”
#StopViolenceNow Campaign Goals
The United Nations in Ukraine is launching the #StopViolenceNow campaign to emphasize that combating violence cannot wait. The war has proven that every life is invaluable, and there may not be another chance to act.
